Haiti Fundraiser

Dear family and friends,

On June 27th, I will be leaving for Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This will be my fourth trip, and my first after the earthquake in 2010. I'm writing this letter to you not because I need any financial help (my flight is booked, and my personal expenses are set aside); I'm writing to you because your donation can make a difference.

Prior to the earthquake of 2010, my role in Haiti was to teach English to students unable to afford any education, to distribute food and clothes to those in need, and to shower the love and affection of God onto those who've never experienced it. As an aside, it is amazing how much love and affection was poured onto me by those I encountered. This summer, when I return for my fourth trip, my role will be a little different.

My team and I will still teach, distribute, and love (and be loved upon), but my other main role will be to build. Part of my time will be spent building furniture for a local church and school (benches, chairs, desks). Another part will be spent preparing meals for the children of a local orphanage. In addition, as much as we can collect and as much as we can carry, my team and I will be bringing support and tools for the children, youth, and young adults of (multivitamins, shoes, pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, etc).

And just to put things into perspective, based on estimates by the World Bank in 2005, the percentage of people living below the US$1 per day poverty line in Haiti was 54%; the percentage of people living below the US$2 per day poverty line in Haiti was 78%; I do not anticipate much has changed since then. The infant mortality rate is approximately 64 of every 1000 (compared to 6 of every 1000 in the US). Finally, increasing numbers of Haiti's poor are resorting to eating mud cookies for sustenance (http://www.nbcnews.com/id/22902512/ns/world_news-americas/t/haitis-poor-resort-eating-mud-prices-rise/#.UYBZvbWG0_g). There is yet a lot to be done in Haiti.

Join me. With however large or small your donation, you will be joining me in teaching, distributing, preparing, building, and loving.

"Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed, down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return." (Luke 6:38)

A million thanks for your prayers and support,

Joseph Yu
