Our David & Goliath Story
In the Heart of the White Mountains, New Hampshire there is a mountain (see photos below) but it’s not covered by beautiful evergreens, it’s a Commercial Municipal Solid Waste Landfill that is growing and threatening the health of residents and the Ammonoosuc River Watershed. We are raising funds to stop this landfill district from expanding to 161 acres. We must prevent this from happening to protect our environment and the health of our community.

Money is needed for community outreach to ensure Bethlehem residents are informed and incentivized to take action to vote NO on the two warrant articles that will appear on the ballot in March. The petitioned articles are being proposed by a group that is funded by the landfill owners. One petition would change the landfill district from 61 to 161 acres. The other is ordering the Board of Selectman to make an Host Community Agreement with the landfill to allow for the landfill to continue bringing trash from 6 states for another 20 years. Your contribution will help us ensure that voters know the truth and dangers so they can make an informed decision based on facts not corporate propaganda and greed.
Who We Are
Environmental Action for Northern New Hampshire is a non-profit educational organization, founded in 1998, dedicated to promoting and protecting the environmental well being of Bethlehem, NH and the surrounding region.
A Brief History
Casella Waste Systems of Rutland, Vermont has bullied its way into the town of Bethlehem, New Hampshire (population 2500) by engaging the town in lawsuits for over 25 years against zoning laws restricting the dump’s growth. In November 2011 a Settlement Agreement was signed to end the costly lawsuits. It included the condition that the landfill would never seek to expand in exchange for the town changing its zoning laws to allow them to fill 8 more acres. The article passed because the voters wanted its size limited to 61 acres and see it capped and permanently closed in 2021.
Why does this landfill need to be stopped?
• It negatively affects the quality of life of our residents.
• Creates nauseating odors that are already smelled at homes and businesses town wide.
• Negatively affects the tourism economy as the mountain of trash can be seen from nearby mountain tops including: Cannon Mountain Ski Area, the Sugarloafs and Mount Washington.
• Property values are adversely affected.
• Landfills are one of the biggest contributors of greenhouse gas. It is only a few miles away from the water supplies of surrounding communities, and only yards away from the Ammonoosuc and Gale Rivers. Since the US Environmental Protection Agency acknowledges that all landfill liners eventually leak, it is just a matter of time that our town will be another statistic of towns with contaminated water.
