Proposal:
The first national Black history museum will open this year in Washington DC, after eighty years of promises to do so by Congress. It is a landmark event, because it is exhibiting a history that has been largely ignored. The mission of BSA is to create a forum for black students to not only come together and discuss issues of race, identity, current events, but to also inform the student body and the wider community of black issues through awareness campaigns and civic engagement. For the last three years, BSA has honored Black History month by creating awareness posters and by doing the “Black History Blurb” on the Rebel Report. BSA has focused a great deal on history as it pertains to identity and current events. The next step for BSA is civic engagement, and a trip to Washington DC to see the museum and visit the Capital is directly in line with that mission. The students who go will create a presentation (connecting what they learned at the museum to current issues) based on their trip to do for the U.S. History classes at South, as well as for the wider school community. This trip and its ensuing project will help promote black leadership, scholarship, and student engagement at South. It is also in line with promoting South’s mission of Equity, and will be beneficial to the school as a whole. This is the kind of opportunity that I believe will create opportunity for these students, by showing them that access learning experiences like this is attainable through vision and hard work. We have approximately two-thirds of the money we need raised, but we just need this last little bit to ensure that we can go. Your help with this will not only reach the students who get the incredible opportunity to visit this museum in its inagural year, it will also reach the wider school community through their presentations on Black history, culture, identity, and resiliance.
Funding:
We have received a grant for the plane tickets, and we have raised 1550.00 for the hotel stay. We have also been granted money for an African American Heritage tour, but we still need more funding for the hotel stay. We are trying to stay as close to the museum as we possibly can, in order to have more access and to eliminate potential transportation costs. Based on research, a hotel stay for our group will cost between $3,000-$3500. I would also like to raise a little money to pay for student dinners, because I don't want money to be a factor for their ability to go.
In order to lock in lower hotel rates, we are hoping to raise the money for the hotel stay by early to mid-October.
