My name is Tanja and I am an above knee amputee. I am 24 years old and from Slovenia. Currently I live in Maribor, where I study Psychology at the Faculty of Arts. Nearly eight years ago, I was diagnosed with bone cancer and in the process of recovery they had to amputate my left leg above my knee. My story after the sickness and amputation is full of ups and downs, excruciating pain, searching for strength to cope with depression, but there is also full of positive experiences.
In my free time I try to attend extra-classes and events as often as possible. I like to spend time outside and on the move, as far as my handicap allows me to.
Despite the good prosthesis some distance are too much for me, and weather conditions don't help. Snow, sun, and heat, in addition to the pain I experience while walking for too long, are one of the major obstacles in my mobility, which I want to increase. The idea of overcoming long distances spoils my days, forcing me in a bad mood, even depression, and reminds me of my limitations, which I would like to overcome. Sometimes i don't leave the house for days, beacause I can't gather the strenght to tackle all the obstacles that wait for me when I set my foot outside. When I am moving around, when I know that I have the opportunity to explore new places and to attend the events that are beyond my immediate environment and when I know that I can go on a way without any care, then sometimes for a moment I feel like in the years before my disease. In those moments I feel full of energy and I feel that my accident will not stop me in achieving my full potential.
I use public transport a lot, but for someone like me even walk to the nearest bus stop in summer heat or in snowy winter can be too much of a challenge. For example in winter even the slightest patch of ice is a death trap, not to mention the snow on the pavements. And in the summer the heat is awful, I am using so much energy to walk that I get tired and sweaty just walking for couple of minutes and then my prosthetis starts to slip from my stump. It is just horrible. Not to mention that I feel like I am slowing everybody down and that I don't get to be spontaneous any more...
Therefore, I am collecting money for a car with an automatic transmission. Just to make it easier for me to get to classes, to find a job and then be reliable at it and to visit and explore the world which sometimes seems too big for a girl on one leg. I really can not afford to buy a car with the low income I have. If anyone thinks that you have something to spare and to donate to my cause, I would really appreciate it. Thank you all very much, love you.
P.s. Any remaining money, that I will not use for getting a vehicle I will donate to Društvo študentov invalidov Slovenija ("Society for diasable students Slovenia"), a group which helped me a lot in the past when I was struggling with problems.
