<div>On June 2, my mom, Susana, attended what should have been one of the happiest and most hopeful moments of her life - her U.S. residency interview. She arrived with my brother, a proud U.S. Air Force veteran who was sponsoring her application, believing they were taking the final step toward keeping our family together.

<div>Instead, our lives changed forever.

<div>In the middle of the interview, my mother was detained by ICE despite having parole. She was taken to a detention center, and just one week later, she was deported in the middle of the night. Our family was left terrified and searching for answers. For hours, we could not locate her and did not know where she had been taken. More than 12 agonizing hours passed before we finally received a call from my mom. She informed us that she had been deported to Tabasco, Mexico, a location more than 17 hours away from her hometown.

<div>My mom had spent more than 25 years building her life in the United States. She raised us here, supported our family, volunteered at local food pantries, helped at our schools, and served our church community. She was the mother who never missed a school event, a game, or an important milestone.

<div>For the first time in her life, my mom missed a milestone she had been eagerly anticipating - my little brother’s high school graduation. While we were able to attend my brother’s graduation, my mom sat in a detention center, unable to be by his side.
</div>

<div>Today, our family faces an uncertain future. My youngest brother, who is just 9 years old, wakes up every day asking when he will see our mom again. He doesn't know where he will attend school next year or when our family will be reunited.

Durante horas, no pudimos localizarla y no sabíamos adónde la habían llevado. Pasaron más de 12 angustiosas horas antes de que finalmente recibiéramos una llamada de mi mamá. Nos informó que había sido deportada a Tabasco, México, un lugar que se encuentra a más de 17 horas de distancia de su ciudad natal.

Era la madre que nunca faltaba a un evento escolar, un partido o un momento importante de nuestras vidas.

Aunque nosotros pudimos asistir a su graduación, mi mamá permanecía en un centro de detención, incapaz de estar a su lado en ese día tan especial.

<div>Hoy, nuestra familia enfrenta un futuro incierto. Mi hermano menor, que tiene apenas 9 años, se despierta cada día preguntando cuándo volverá a ver a nuestra mamá. No sabe dónde asistirá a la escuela el próximo año ni cuándo nuestra familia podrá reunirse nuevamente.
