Peyton's fight against cancer

On August 11, 2012 my 2 year old son Peyton woke up with a high fever, black eye, and was unable to move. We rushed to the ER and waited while tests were performed. On August 15, 2012 we heard the news that every parent fears. My sweet baby Peyton was diagnosed with stage IV high risk neuroblastoma cancer. The aggressive cancer had metastasized his lymph node and spread to his hips, spine and skull. They put his chance at survival at 50%. Our hearts plummeted to the floor. He was immediately put on chemotherapy the following week and has been in and out of the hospital since then. It has been over 8 months since that fateful day and we thank the Lord every day Peyton is still with us. In addition to the countless biopsies, MRI and CAT scans, Peyton has undergone 7 cycles of chemotherapy, 12 rounds of radiation, surgery to remove the tumor along with one of his adrenal glands and now a bone marrow transplant. It is a long and difficult road ahead for any cancer patient, much less a 2 year-old toddler. My husband and I had to quit our jobs and move back to Houston to be closer to Texas Children's Hospital where he is being treated. It is a harsh reality our family is facing, as our little Peyton will likely never live the life of a normal and healthy child and is always at risk to develop long term complications from the cancer and treatments. Despite the challenges, our brave little Peyton has maintained his spirit throughout which brings us to tears. Our daily prayers and faith in God has brought us together as a family and helped us through our struggles.
