Food for Freedom

Provides fresh, home cooked meals using local produce for families facing homelessness due to domestic violence.  Food for Freedom has provided  1000+ such meals each Monday and Wednesday night over the last twelve months.

With our seed funding now finished, the money raised from this campaign will support the ongoing continuation of this vital program to suport women and children who are moving on from domestic violence and support local domestic violence and homelessness agencies in providing this service.

Significance of this project

This project addresses the nutritional vulnerability of women and children escaping domestic violence, and also builds the capacity of these women moving on from domestic violence to provide healthy family meals.

In 2014, SDVS placed 109 women and 126 children in motel accommodation. During a week in southern Adelaide, an average of three women and five children seek refuge from SDVS fleeing a violent domestic situation and are housed in motel accommodation.

Women and children in this crisis situation are known to have constrained access to nutritious meals due to safety concerns, lack of transport options and financial barriers to source healthy low cost food. Women in crisis accommodation are also thought to avoid venturing outside for fear of confronting their perpetrators. Some quotes from an informal needs assessment of women attending SDVS in 2015 were: ‘I don’t think I even wanted to eat’; ‘I can’t really remember.  So much was going on’; ‘You get sick of pizza after a while… The kids did too’.

Given the inadequate kitchen facilities in motels, it is highly likely that women and children survive almost exclusively on convenience and fast foods during their stay. These foods are considered less healthy because they generally have higher levels of fat, salt or sugar compared to home-cooked meals.

Providing 2-3 main meals plus dessert over a week, which would aim to meet 50% of an individual’s daily recommended serves of fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, and grains, would improve their overall nutritional intake, and this would assist recovery from trauma and establishing a new safer and healthier life.

The provision of healthy meals to women and children in motels will promote healthy meals as the norm. It will also communicate care, respect value and support, which will be invaluable to their process of recovery from the trauma of domestic violence.
