Elliot's Trip to Africa

Hello my name is Elliot Moormann and this summer I plan to travel to Switzerland and then Kenya to experience first hand Global Health Medicine. I will be able to shadow doctors and witness medicine without borders- all giving me great insight into a career I plan to pursue.
Ever since sixth grade I have always wanted to become a doctor. I am now a junior in high school in Saint Paul Minnesota. I work hard in school and maintain a 3.97 GPA. I am involved in athletics: playing soccer, hockey, baseball, and rowing crew. In school I participate in many clubs. I am a board member of Peer Mediation, a group dedicated to solving conflicts through peaceful means in our community. I am also on the executive board of National Honor Society and head of the school's Environmental Committee.
I will be traveling with my Aunt, Dr. Ann Moormann, who is an Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. My Aunt is leading a study that aims to shed light on endemic Burkitt Lymphoma. Burkitt Lymphoma is the most common childhood cancer in Equatorial Africa but it can be cured with chemotherapy if the children reach a hospital in time.
In Switzerland I will be able to attend part of the 8th International Symposium on Tonsils and Mucosal Barriers of the Upper Airways. This Conference focuses on the key topics in the field of immunology, infectious diseases, and oncology research and clinics. This conference will teach me about current health issues and help expand my knowledge of medicine. (My Aunt will be presenting her research at this conference.)
After the conference we will fly to Kenya where I will have opportunities to shadow doctors and nurses, read to children in the hospital and basically see how medicine works in a resource-limited setting.
This trip is a lifetime opportunity and I would greatly appreciate it if you could help support my trip. My goal is to raise $2,750.00 mostly to cover the cost for my plane ticket. I am extremely excited for my trip and am planning to share my trip with you as it happens. I will be updating a Blog with pictures and news about the trip so you can experience the trip with me! Every penny you donate goes directly towards my trip. No donation is too small. If we are able to surpass the goal, all extra money will be spent on school supplies, books and small toys to be passed out to the children in the hospital in Kenya.
