Support Nurse Barbara's Battle With Cancer

Donation protected
I don't know many people who have fought as hard to be on the planet as my mother has, and after 5 years in remission, she's being tested again.

My mother is a woman of many attributes: She is kind, intelligent, loyal, disciplined, nurturing, and above all has one of the biggest, most empathetic hearts that you will ever come across. Despite the many pitfalls of the medical profession she has spent the better part of her life as a nurse healing the sick. She's worked with rape victims, addicts, trauma cases, and supported those in the last few minutes of their lives. Her passion, however, has been performing one of the most sacred acts a woman can perform: aiding in childbirth. She has personally delivered hundreds of babies and assisted in hundreds more.

Through it all, through raising my brother and I while working from home, through hundreds of sleepiness nights, through supporting those around her, she has remained so very strong. In the beginning of 2013, she received news of one of her greatest tests of strength to date: a aggressive cancerous lesion under her tongue in her mouth. According to statistics, it is very rare that she would suffer this kind of cancer due to the fact that she never smoked or drank.

That year, after having all of her bottom teeth removed, part of her tongue and jaw, as well as radiation, she beat a very rare, aggressive cancer, and was in remission up until 2 weeks ago.

The cancer is back, and has grown 10X in the last two weeks. It's also very aggressive, and her doctors have given her a choice: 6 months, or to have her jaw bone, part of her tongue, and remaining teeth removed. She won't be able to eat again through her mouth, she'll require a tube, and we're hoping that she'll be able to speak after the surgery.

Because of the way the medical industry in our country works, as I'm sure you know, there was much that wasn't covered by insurance last time, as it will be this time as well. Because her cancer is in her mouth, many aspects of her treatment are itemized, and anything deemed "dental," not to "save her life," isn't covered.

As you can imagine, surgeries, hospitalization and rehab and physical therapy are exorbitantly expensive. And despite everyone's best efforts, the bills somewhat insurmountable.

In the last few years my family has had a lot of financial and business hardship. As the medical bills pile up, our options become fewer and harder to come by. Please help aid our family in an attempt to heal my mother for the second time. We thank you so much for your time in reading this, your attention, and your love and support.

With much gratitude,
