There aren’t many series that celebrate an openly queer, POC female protagonist. Let’s make this a reality. In a dystopian future, bereft of the resources to survive, one young girl's action may make the difference between whether her community endures, or drowns in the rush to attain oil.
WHO WE ARE
Writer and co-director Shailyn Cotten had always wanted to shoot a series featuring a strong female protagonist surviving in the remote Appalachian mountains. Co-developer and co-director Jessica Naftaly had always wanted to work as a showrunner on a series that has an epic scale, grounded characters, and deals with authentic real world problems. Together, they created AFTER OIL.
THE SERIES
Five years after the world depletes its oil reserves, a group of cyclists led by 19-year old Briar Dunlap has banded together to ferry food deliveries to the locals in Pahokee, Pennsylvania in order to keep the town afloat during the crisis. But when a group of corporate oil moguls come to Pahokee claiming that the town is rich in shale oil, not only is Briar’s new way of living put at risk, but the future of her town is at stake.
THE PILOT
Five years after the world depletes its oil reserves, a group of cyclists led by 19-year old Briar Dunlap has banded together to ferry food deliveries to the locals in Pahokee, Pennsylvania in order to keep the town afloat during the crisis. WHERE YOUR SUPPORT IS GOING
This pilot requires the greatest expertise and resources in order to be made. With your support, we will be able to actualize our vision for this series.
Locations: We need to secure the necessary permissions for our beautiful Upstate locations, and provide the needed insurances to lock down public and outdoor locations.
Production Design and Hair/Makeup: This pilot takes place in a future world that does not currently exists. In order to bring that world to life, we need top notch production design, and access to the best materials for hair and makeup to be able to construct these places and characters from the ground up.
Logistics: We are moving all of our crew and equipment from New York City to Upstate New York, and we will need to have the gas to get from place to place.
Casting: Our goal is to hire brilliant actresses who will embody these characters and this world in the most authentic way. We are also going to be casting local talent from the Catskill Mountain area, to fulfill the roles of the secondary and background characters.
Equipment Costs: Shooting in the mountains is no easy feat. Our camera department has a lot on their plate; from outdoor lighting, to massive tracking shots, we need high-quality professional industry equipment in order to get this story on the screen.
Lodging: We have a large crew, and a handful of principal actors who will need to be housed Upstate for the duration of our shoot.
Catering: When you're out in the wilderness, staying fed and hydrated is incredibly important! We'll be needing to provide breakfast, lunch, dinner for up to 30 cast and crew members in order to keep everyone going.
