<div>The Scotland African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church was built by hand and opened in 1924 by Black congregants in Potomac. The church building is registered as a State Historic Site by the Maryland Historical Trust and today is the only historic building to survive in the Scotland community. It is a site of struggle, triumph, and resiliency that deserves to be celebrated and supported.

<div>The original wood-frame structure, one of the last of its kind in the region, was nearly destroyed by a flood in the summer of 2019 and has suffered subsequent damage due to intense tropical storms over the past few years.  These storms damaged the foundation of the church and collapse of the entire structure is imminent without your support.

<div>A new campaign, the <strong>2nd Century Project</strong>, will acknowledge the church’s historic significance — while gathering the financial and social resources to ensure that Scotland and its church play a significant role in Montgomery County in the years and decades ahead.

<div>We are beginning the first phase of our three-phase plan. Phase 1, Restoration: Rebuilding the historic original structure to serve as a community service center for the next 100 years. For this part of the process, we need to raise 1 million dollars. Fundraising efforts are underway, including the previous GoFundMe campaign that raised $57,657. This page will be updated to reflect our progress as we hear back from grants and other community sponsors.

<div>With your help and the support a campaign committee comprised of descendants of the original Scotland founders, civic leaders from across the region, and other congregation members, this three-phase campaign will raise enough money to flood-proof the landscape, restore the historic church and transform it into a multi-use fellowship hall, and also build an entirely new worship space that nearly doubles the existing seating capacity.
