2nd Cancer battle
Donation protected
Vera at age 60, a retiree from the Jamaica Observer was again diagnose with cancer. In June 2018 Vera conducted a routine breast self-examination and found what felt like a lump. She went to the ID doctor and unfortunately was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She had a mastectomy in August 2018. The sample was sent to University Hospital of the West Indies for further analysis to determine what type of cancer it was. The result of that test was even more devastating, as it was confirmed that she had a highly progressive breast cancer (triple negative Stage 4) , which is extremely aggressive, and chemotherapy was started immediately. Due to the aggressive nature of the cancer she had to receive 16 dosages of chemo. When treatment was completed a PET scan showed no sign of cancer in the breast, lymph nodes and lungs. However, there were 2 legions on Vera's spine. The total cost of surgeries, chemo, and radiation was US$38,000. Thankfully, she was able to finance it by using her health card and savings along with help from family and friends, but she was left financially crippled. However, she was grateful to be alive and basically cancer-free at this point.
In September 2020, Vera started feeling pain in her left hip. Two weeks after the pain started, she was unable to walk or sit up. Several tests have been done and the results show that the cancer has returned and is now in her bones. Tumors have damaged her spine (lumbar vertebrae), which has caused her to become totally immobile. She is currently bedridden and unable to take care of herself. Within the space of two weeks Vera has gone from an able-bodied, independent person to being virtually crippled.
Adding to her distress is the fact that she had depleted every financial resource to pay for the breast cancer treatments; now she doesn't know where to turn. All her savings are gone and the insurance won't cover more treatments. She has no salary as she is a retiree getting just enough to cover basic household expenses. Vera is unable to seek any type of employment to earn extra money as she is now incapacitated and in constant pain. Friends and family members are now taking shifts to give her support in carrying out her daily functions.
The total cost for this round of treatment is US$35,000. This will cover surgery to place pins in her lumbar to give support to the spine, followed by physiotherapy so that she can walk again and radiation to treat the cancer.
Vera has been a hard-working, independent person all her life, but now she has fallen ill and needs your help. Please consider donating to help with her medical expenses so that she can beat this Cancer again! Any donation would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. She gives thanks to God for his blessings and mercy along the journey. God Bless.
