Greetings Family and Friends!
As many of you may know, Jeff has been an insulin dependent Type 1 Diabetic since he was 22 which requires multiple self-injections on a daily basis to properly regulate. He has a rare hereditary type of diabetes (MODI) that over the generations have inflicted the males of his family at younger and younger ages. Current research suggests the odds of our son(s) developing Type 1 diabetes at an even a younger age than Jeff is significant.
Facing this reality, we have decided to take action and start what we are calling Project Hope and are humbly reaching out to others to help with the cause. As you know we are expecting our second son, who we will name Luke, in late June. Luke will not only provide us with the blessing of another child but also provides us an opportunity to collect both cord blood and cord tissue during the delivery. Cord blood and cord tissue can both be harvested for different types of stems cells that can then be stored and used to treat various cancers, blood disorders, genetic diseases, and HOPEfully soon: diabetes.
Project Hope is simple. Instead of people buying us gifts/presents for Luke, we are inviting everyone to collectively share in this potential life-changing or life-saving cause by donating to help offset the cost related to harvesting the stem cells from the cord blood and tissue. It is rare that as parents we can proactively plan for certain dangers and it is our sincere Hope that if our worst fears do materialize for Luke and/or John, their saving grace will come collectively from all the people they will grow up to know and love in life.
