Kaya has become more and more fascinated with ocean studies. She began a few years ago by independently studying sharks. As a homeschooler, she read voraciously everything she could find about sharks, including shark anatomy, ecology, and conservation. This particular block of study, culminated with a 2 hour presentation for her family and friends.
She has continued to learn about aquatic plants and animals. After receiving gifts of both fish and tanks, she has set up numerous aquariums in our home, starting with a small 2.5 gallon tank and, more recently, a 55 gallon tank. Without the aid of others, she performs all of the research necessary to diagnose problems with the tanks and has become something of an expert in home fish care. In fact, in an effort to help pay for this camp, she has begun teaching other homeschoolers how to start their own healthy aquariums.
Kaya intends to pursue a degree program in Marine Biology. In fact, she has found a couple of programs at local colleges and universities. She has visited the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center at the University of New England and has met some of the students and faculty who work there. Additionally, she has met with an associate professor who is involved with both the Master's and Bachelor's level programs at the University New England and the Associates level program at Southern Maine Community College.
More immediately, Kaya plans to attend marine biology camp this summer to continue her studies. She found this camp, Acadia Institute of Oceanography, which allows her to receive her first 4 college credits while attending. Please, help her to continue to pursue her passion.
