In September of 2016 my dad developed a cough that he thought was possibly just a common cold coming on. After a few weeks of having this persistent painful cough my dad was at work (had very physically demanding line of work) he noticed blood in the mucus that he would cough up. He initially thought he may have Pneumonia…
On October 17th 2016, he was at work at one of his favorite projects yet at work. He was in the construction industry and was involved with the building of the new Children’s Hospital – Stanford. My dad, always being very active and in shape, found himself winded doing daily physical activities that he usually wouldn’t have ever had issues with such as walking upstairs or even just walking prolonged distances. Do to him being so exhausted and winded, he would have to stop what he was doing to rest and he would have severe coughing spells which led to him discovering even more blood in his mucus. He decided to take himself to the emergency room at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Gatos. All I remember is my mom Cindy calling me and all I heard was her crying and asking me to come to the hospital. I, of course, rushed over to the hospital and when I walked into the room I seen my dad lying there with a look on his face I had not been familiar with seeing. My parents both explained that the doctors did x-rays and they found a mass which consumed his entire left lung. My dad was then admitted to the main hospital which was very nerve racking for the whole family. The next day- all day, they ran a lot of different tests that honestly, I can’t even pronounce. They discovered that the lung mass was indeed, cancerous. One of “those tests” included a CT scan and they also found that the cancer had spread to his brain stem (small cell carcinoma). He was then diagnosed with Lung and Brain cancer- stage 4. The oncologists immediately recommended that he start a very aggressive attack on the cancer with 10 days straight of chemo therapy & radiation. The doctors made a plan which would allow my dad to come home but continue the aggressive chemo & radiation for a few months to follow + blood transfusions.
Seeing the drastic change in my dad is hands down one the most difficult things I’ve witnessed. This goes for the whole family. My dad has always worked extremely hard to provide for us. I have to remind myself that even though it is very hard for my mom (his wife) me, and my younger brother we cannot be selfish and have to remember how hard it is for him to go through this at such a young age (48) Obviously, my dad can no longer work so my mom has been pulling all the financial weight not to mention emotional weight every single day. Watching my mom wake up every day going to work, coming home, taking care of my dad and every day stressors is heart wrenching. Financially, it has become too much and as a family we humbly share this story with you to ask for your generous and appreciated donation. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask!
