Gordie's Greatest Fight

Gordie Gong is a lifelong martial artist who helped to pioneer combat sports in North America. He also spent much of his life committed to economic and community development in First Nations communities. In addition, Gordie is a devoted husband and father of four, and grandfather to three girls.
Although he was a kickboxing and Muay Thai champion who fought and won all over the world throughout the 1980s, his most powerful legacy lies in the countless lives he impacted during his 40 year career as a teacher and mentor. In this work, he purposefully set up gyms in First Nations communities and in low-income parts of the city, choosing his passion for sharing martial arts with people in need, instead of more revenue-based business models. And now, after 4 decades of service, we are hoping that the seeds he planted along the way might provide him with nourishment as begins his most difficult fight yet.
In mid-July, Gordie suffered a severe stroke, followed by two more, which left him in a coma. His outlook was bleak, but true to his fighter spirit, he has been battling to recover. Although his brain is fully intact, he is faced with limited mobility and speech. Gordie is still in the ICU, but thankfully he is now stable and almost ready to begin a long road to recovery.
As expected, a medical emergency of this size and length poses a huge financial burden on his family. In addition to medical expenses, Gordie’s illness has meant missed income, rehabilitation costs, and possibly retrofitting his house to accommodate his needs around recovery and mobility.
Although Gordie devoted his life to helping others, he has never been a person to ask for help. So – in this time of need – his family is asking for support on his behalf. Your donations will help with Gordie’s medical, rehabilitation, and household expenses, as well as any construction needed to modify his home.
