Support medicine that crosses borders

Hello, my name is Jacquelyn Brito and I am an aspiring physician whose passion lies in public health and in advocating for the Latino community.  I have been accepted to an international program where I will be going to Oaxaca, Mexico for four weeks to work in underserved rural areas. 

As a medical student, the cost of this program  almost seems unattainable. Please help me meet my goal of raising the cost to participate in this amazing opportunity.

Working in the rural community of Oaxaca will help me understand the major barriers to adequate healthcare in these communities. I plan to take that knowledge  and apply it when I become a medical director at the Hollywood/Sunset Free Clinic delivering quality care.  These uninsured patients also have some of the same  barriers to access healthcare and rely on clinics for their routine care. As a daughter of Mexican immigrants, working in Oaxaca will give me a unique opportunity to learn and help in providing health care and information to people who need it.

Here are some numbers that drive my passion and demonstrate the need for the type of work I am committed to:

-Latinos represent 16% of the country's population and ONLY 5% of physicians
-This statistic has not changed since 2008
-Latinos are estimated to reach 25% of the nation's residents by 2050
-The new healthcare law will have many benefits, however, there will still be a large number of immigrants that will rely on clinics for their routine medical care
