Help send 3,000 books to Ghana

I am ShonTe Smith, the director of “The When I Grow up Project”. It is a pleasure and a honor to have the opportunity to present this project to you and ask for your support. Following is a detailed description of a book drive I am organizing to send 3,000 books to Ho, Ghana. This seemingly small initiative will not only provide literature, but will build cross cultural connections between Ghanaians and American students.

The When I Grow up Project is a motivational documentary that focuses on inspiring and encouraging children to follow their dreams despite the obstacles they may be faced with. In 2013 I directed this documentary with the production of Shangosoul Entertainment and support of Plainfield New Jersey Community Television Network. The project began as a summer camp activity for a group of children ages 6-12 years old in Plainfield, New Jersey. The vision was to expose role models in the community for children to become inspired. The group of twenty student and I went around Plainfield and asked community members and professionals about their motivation and to describe their occupation in detail. All interactions were recorded and became the foundation for the film. Throughout the summer the film was aired on Plainfield Television Network.

After two years of researching and networking I realized this project can encourage children around the world and become a motivational movement. This thought gave birth to the “Follow your Dreams Tour”. This is a global journey where I travel to different countries to enhance the short film to a complete documentary by gaining global perspective, interviewing international volunteers, and understanding how environment affects opportunities.

Spring 2016 I volunteered at a high school in Ho, Ghana where I also interviewed volunteers, teachers, and a few students discussing goals for the future, stories about their culture, and words of encouragement. During this volunteer assignment I visited their school library and I had a vision that I am inviting you to be a part of. The library is called “Read 100 Library” unfortunately the library contained about 150 books at the most. This inspired me to collect books to send back to their library. With your help, we can send 3,000 books to Read 100 Library.  All books must be in good condition. In addition to book donations I am seeking donors to assist with the cost of shipping and handling which is approximately $3,000 including containers, boxes, tape, and unforeseen expenses. My goal is to receive $30.00 from 100 donors to reach this amount. All donors will receive a receipt and an invitation to attend a shipping event where all supporters and donors will be able to join together for an evening of networking and loading the books on the trunk to be shipped to Ho, Ghana.  Overall, I am asking for your support. Please forward this gofundme page to any one you may know that will be interested in helping send 3,000 books to Read 100 Library in Ho, Ghana. Thank you again for your interest and support. I await the opportunity to work together with you on this project.

With gratitude,
ShonTe Smith
