In Botswana 500 babies died needlessly during a diarrhea out-break from malnutrition and dehydration. Which is why we are raising funds to teach a lifesaving technique.
The simple act of putting a baby on a mother’s skin regulates a baby’s heartbeat, blood sugar levels and temperature more efficiently than an incubator. "The very best environment for a baby to grow and thrive, is the mother's body," says Dr Nils Bergman, a doctor specializing in Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in South Africa. "When placed skin-to-skin on the mother's chest, the baby receives warmth, protection and food, and its brain can develop optimally. The mother's skin is the baby's natural environment, and both physically and emotionally the healthiest place for the baby to be”.
In 1979, Doctors Rey and Martinez started a programme in Colombia recommending that mothers kept their babies close to their skin due to a shortage of incubators. Little did they realise the staggering medical results this would unearth. Today the practice is known as KMC (Kangaroo Mother Care http://kangaroomothercare.com).
REGULATING TEMPERATURE
A mother of premature twins can place her babies on her chest and if one baby is too hot and the other too cold, her body is clever enough to lower the temperature of one breast and raise the temperature of the other accordingly.
This incredible process is called thermal synchrony, and just another benefit of skin-to-skin contact, which also promotes weight gain and helps establish breastfeeding.
Just US$15,000 will pay for a medical team to teach KMC to health professionals in Botswana in order to roll it out to people everywhere in the country, rich or poor.
