Our friend, Kelsey, entered the ICU at Children's Hospital 3 days ago. Kelsey was originally tested for Leukemia which was ruled out. Soon after, we learned that she has a virus that is attacking her immune system; the virus is called Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis also known as HLH.
Yesterday, Kelsey was treated with chemotherapy (not because she has cancer but because that is the right treatment for this virus). She had a very rough day yesterday but the initial results seemed positive.
Today, Kelsey took a turn for the worse. The virus seems to be attacking her organs such as her lungs and heart.
She had an episode today where the virus has compromised her heart and they use the paddles to get a regular heart beat back.
As of right now, she is 100% sedated, intubated and paralyzed from the neck down which is medically induced. The doctors are trying to let her body rest and heal as much as possible.
They have just done a spinal tap to see if the virus has gone to the brain. We are waiting on the results tonight. Kelsey underwent a cat-scan earlier this evening and the good news is that she has normal brain activity which obviously is a very positive sign.
Kelsey cannot have any visitors due to her compromised immune system...so many people have asked what they can do to help; therefore, we are putting together this gofundme page to help the family with all of the medical expenses they are incurring.
