Volunteer: Construction Project in Peru

Donation protected
Hello there!

My name is Kerrie Green. I graduated with a degree in Architecture last Spring. I wanted to take some time to gain some more experience in the field before going back to school for my Masters of Architecture. I am very interested in working with communities on projects that will help them grow and develop; schools, community centres, hospitals, public gathering spaces, recreation - you name it!

I feel that these experiences are ones that you need to immerse yourself in fully. I've travelled a fair amount for school, for pleasure and for work. In the past, I have done one past trip for Habitat for Humanity down to Biloxi, Mississippi. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much. Being a good architect is, to me, not just about good design but also about getting the community involved with your project. Listening to others input is essential, as is working directly with your construction crew. This project will not only have me working on the job site but I will be living in a home stay in Cusco with a local family learning about the culture, language, community, etc. first hand. It is a great opportunity to give back and develop some skills and learn some valuable lessons!

So, I am here asking for your help. I have signed on with IVHQ, an international volunteer agency based in New Zealand who partners with local agencies around the world. They help the locals find the help they need to make their various projects possible. I am registered for their Construction and Renovation Project in Cusco, Peru for September & October. I need your help to make this trip possible. Whatever you can give is very much appreciated!

Most of the funds will be going directly to IVHQ to fund my program costs - these include the cost of supplies needed for construction and paying my host family in Cusco that I will be staying with (they take care of my food and accommodations the entire 2 months and the stipend covers this cost). The link to their site below provides a more detailed explanation of these things. The other funds are going towards paying for my flights, travel insurance, vaccinations, and so forth. The number above is a projected required amount, determined based on research. I will be posting updates every step of the way. When I book flights, the total cost incurred will be posted and so forth. I feel it is very important that everyone is as informed as possible about this project and the ways that you are helping it come together.

For every donation, I will be happy to provide a booklet detailing the trip cost break down (program costs, flights, etc.), a copy of the letter from IVHQ confirming my partication in the program and a link to my blog for the trip (if you'd like to follow along and see what the building projects are). I would also love to send a personalized, hand made 'thank you' to each and every donor - I can do this electronically or via regular post (whatever you are most comfortable with!) including a photo from the trip.

For those who are interested, I have strong representational skills (primarily in drawing and painting) and I am happy to do some graphic design work by donation as well. Just send me an email and we can go from there!

Thank you so much for your time. If you have any questions for me about the project, don't hesistate to contact me.

Cheers,

Kerrie Green
