About the charities:

Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago:

History and Mission:

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is the nation's premier provider of comprehensive physical medicine and rehabilitation care to patients from around the World. RIC was founded in

1954 by Dr. Paul B. Magnuson, who became a devoted and passionate advocate for people with disabilities after serving as the medical director for the Veterans Administration following World War II. Carrying on Magnuson's legacy, Dr. Henry B. Betts came to RIC in 1963 and continued to advance RIC's mission by building its current flagship hospital, expanding its research program, and strengthening education and advocacy programs to serve people with disabilities. Dr. Joanne C. Smith, RIC's current President and CEO, has built upon and expanded the vision for RIC to encompass a more integrated, dynamic, and synergistic relationship between clinical care and research in rehabilitation medicine.

RIC's mission is to provide the highest quality patient care, research, and education in rehabilitation medicine, and it has been ranked as the number one rehabilitation hospital in the country by US. News and World Report for 21 consecutive years. In fact, RIC has achieved this top honor every year since the rankings first began to evaluate specialty hospitals in 1991. RIC is the only hospital ever to receive 21 consecutive# 1 rankings, and the achievements that have earned this unprecedented recognition continue to be advanced-With compassion, hope and creativity as the hallmarks of RIC's service, all the institution's efforts also strive for the fullest assimilation and acceptance of the physically disabled in the community.

Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation:

History & Mission:

The Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation's roots stretch back to 1982 when the American Paralysis Association was formed by a group of people that refused to accept the prevailing notion that the spinal cord, once injured, could not be repaired. The founders of the American Paralysis Association had an unwavering belief that researchers and neuroscientists, working together, would find a way to connect and regenerate the damaged nerves and cells that result in paralysis

Christopher sought out the organization following his injury in 1995. As Christopher said, "I have always been a crusader for causes I believe in. This time, the cause found me." Christopher shared the American Paralysis Association's belief in a cure and lent his name, passion and drive to the organization which ultimately became known as the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
