Please Help Bring Paul Home

     Our son, Paul (PJ), has been in the hospital for nearly 10 months and he really wants to come home.  In the early morning hours of July 2, 2012, we got a call from the Thornton Police Department telling us that Paul had been badly injured.  They were unclear about what had happened, but instructed us to go to the Denver Health trauma center immediately.  We did so, and after an agonizing twenty-some minutes the neurosurgical team came out and told us that Paul had suffered a "terrible injury" to his head and his survival was questionable, if not impossible.  Through the support of family and friends, and his own incredible strength and will to live, Paul is alive and still fighting to recover.  He was essentially in a coma for 6 months.  Many believed he would never come out of it, and his emergence is being called a "miracle".  Paul still faces severe physical challenges, but he's improving every day.  He is currently undergoing intensive rehab at Craig Hospital - Denver, Colorado, working hard to regain the basic functions that most of us take for granted, such as swallowing, talking, and controlling movement.  Placing Paul in a nursing home was suggested by many of the social workers on his team throughout his hospital stay.  We would rather bring him back to the home he grew up in, where he can live in a more familiar and enriched environment.  In order to do so, we need to remodel our basement and purchase equipment that will provide Paul with safe mobility and accessible bathing.  He also needs a wheelchair accessible van to get him to and from his medical and therapy appointments.  All told, costs are estimated to be $60,000 - $75,000.  We have heard great things about this site and are hopeful that it will help provide an avenue for us to bring Paul home.
