WHO AM I?

Hello everyone, my name is Kayla DeVault.  I spent most of my time growing up in the Appalachians.  Currently, I live on the Navajo Nation and attend the tribal college, Diné College, where I am earning an A.A. in Diné
Studies.  I am a Class of 2014 graduate/Provost Scholar from Case Western Reserve University where I studied Civil-Environmental Engineering and French for my undergraduate program.  This fall, I will pursue a Masters in Mechanical Engineering to study alternative energy and tribal policies regarding environmental stewardship.

In 2015, I completed the Center for Native American Youth's Generation Indigenous Challenge by founding a culturally-relevant model for Engineers Without Borders-like projects in Indian Country through the American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES).  I was invited that summer to the 1st White House Tribal Youth Gathering.  I was also invited to speak at the United Nations in Geneva on indigenous rights at the 2nd Universal Periodic Review opposite to then-Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs Kevin Washburn.  In the fall, I was inducted as a sponsored Sequoyah Fellow to the AISES family.

In 2016, I was appointed to a 2-year term with the EPA's NEJAC Youth Perspecitves on Climate Working Group.  I was also recently awarded the 2016 Lyle Mamer Fellowship with WiNUP to pursue my Masters in Energy.  I am currently working with various organizations across the Navajo Nation to create a Climate Working Group for Navajo Youth.  This summer, after a lengthy Creative Challenge, I was selected as one of the youth to travel with the SustainUs COP22 U.S. Delegation to the 2016 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Marrakech, Morocco.

WHY RAISE MONEY FOR COP22?
The annual UN Climate Change Conference is essentially the apex of global climate change movements.  It is where policy-makers gather to make significant and impactful decisions on how to tackle environmental concerns as a global community.  It is also a fantastic opportunity for youth to gain exposure to the entire policy-making process, to unite for a cause we are passionate about, and to lead a campaign to promote the recommendations we collectively agree upon.  Perhaps one day it will be us behind those closed doors creating change with our signatures.  For now, we are on-the-ground volunteers, story collectors, and non-profit workers who have to launch fundraisers like these to make our work happen.

HOW THE MONEY WILL BE USED
I am setting my goal at $2,000 because SustainUs projects it will take just over $2,000 per person to make this delegation work.  In other words, $2,000 will be just about enough to cover my participation on the COP22 SustainUs Delegation this November in Morocco.  This $2,000 will cover:
-participation in our delegation's meet-and-greet retreat this September in California
          -flights to and from Morocco
          -housing while in Morocco
          -food while in Morocco
-less than $100 for other incidentals (including cell phone usage while abroad)

WHEN WE NEED THE FUNDS BY
Our delegation will be jetting off to Morocco in November, with our retreat happening this September.  My intention is to add what I raise to the delegation's pool; therefore, I will fundraise until the end of October 2016.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO ME
I am absolutely esctatic not only to be traveling to Morocco for an important cause, but to have been selected out of the pool of applicants for this position.  I have no doubt anyone selected for COP22 is an asset, working passionately to make change in areas he/she/they feel protects the well-being of all humanity.  I personally want to become involved in alternative energy improvements, policy-making regarding emissions and energy, tribal law-making, protecting tribal rights, and also education.  One day I would love to teach classes about climate at a tribal college.  Going to COP22 will be an invaluable addition to my Resume/CV.

PLEASE, HOWEVER YOU CAN HELP
When I see my friends collecting donations for law school and other causes, I remember all of the times I have been involved in fundraising myself.  It's important to remember that no donation is too small.  Every dollar will help our delegates buy a plate of rice or cup of water.  Collectively, the money will make a huge impact on our trip, on our careers, and on our lives.  Even if it is just a few dollars, the effort you take to click "donate" will be remembered forever by me and my team.  Your SHARES will also help push this project forward and ensure our success.

Ahéhee'.  Niyawe.  Miigwetch.  Thank you!
