We are New York City public school teachers expecting our first child at the end of June. Although we are legally married in the state of New York, our families live in states where that union will not be recognized. Even with the potential for the United States Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, we would like to feel a greater sense of security when we travel and especially with regard to our child. Alanna will automatically receive parental rights when she gives birth, but what about Emily? At the present time, a second parent adoption is the ONLY way to ensure her legal rights as a parent to our child-- regardless of where we travel or what emergencies arise.
