This is Peyton. Peyton is a very intelligent and happy baby. He was born on December 4th, 2012 and has made me the happiest mother ever. I never knew true love until the day I held him for the first time. I am a stay at home wife and mother, and my husband is a soldier in the United States ARMY. We are both first time parents, and are learning so much as we go along on being the best parents we can be.
When Peyton was born, him and I both had a fever. He was kept on an IV for the 3 days we were in the hospital and received antibiotics. After everything looked good and he seemed healthy enough, we were able to go home. With my husband being in the ARMY, we don't live by any family where we are stationed. My mom came down the day I went into labor to be with us. Once we got home from the hospital, everything was amazing. My mom, husband, Peyton, and I were sitting in the Living Room. I was just enjoying the moment. Then as I went to feed Peyton, he started coughing and gasping for air. As he was doing that, he sneezed. Green and yellow mucus started coming out of his mouth and his nose. I panicked, and handed him to my Mom as I grabbed for my phone to call 9-1-1. As I was frantically giving my address to the operator, I looked over at Peyton and saw his face turn completely blue. I was never more scared in my entire life. I honestly thought that I would be burying this precious little baby, just 3 days after he was born. Then all of a sudden, he took a big gasp of air just as I heard the ambulance sirens pull up in front of our house. I knew that God wasn't ready to take my little boy away from me, and I was so thankful.
After Peyton and I went to the hospital in the ambulance, they put him in the ICU for almost 24 hours. They said that he choked on mucus that was probably not suctioned out good enough at the time of his birth. Whatever it was that happened, scared me so bad that I didn't sleep for almost a week because I was scared that my baby was going to choke and die in his sleep. That first week back home again was a nightmare. I was such a mess.
After everything calmed down and I finally was comfortable with the fact that he was able to sleep and he was not going to choke again, life was good again.

Then at his 2 month check-up, his Pediatrician pointed out that his head tilted to one side. She said that Peyton had Torticollis. A condition that is becoming more common in babies where something causes their head to tilt to one side. It could either be from his eyes, his bones, or just a tight muscle in his neck. His Pediatrician referred us to go see a Neurologist and an Ophthalmologist. So we traveled back and forth to Kansas City, MO (2 hours from Fort Riley) to go see the specialists. The eye doctor said so far, Peyton's eyes looked good. The Neurologist did a CT Scan of Peyton's brain and also said that looked good as well. The Neurologist also referred us to a Pediatric Plastic Surgeon after he had examined a severe flat spot on the back of Peyton's head. One of his cheeks is also bigger and pushed forward, along with one of his ears, because of the Torticollis.
So back to Kansas City it was to go see the Plastic Surgeon. The Plastic Surgeon examined Peyton and noticed his spine is curved and that he has an indent in his back down near his tailbone. So he ordered to get X-Rays and an Ultrasound done on his spine to see if the Torticollis is from his spine. Well today, March 28th, 2013, is the day that we met with the Plastic Surgeon so we still haven't received those results back yet. We also met with a specialist today who takes measurements to determine the severity of the head shape and see if getting an infant helmet is the best option. After the examination, the specialist gave me the results. With 5 being the most sever, Peyton's head shape is a 4.
After discussing the helmet and deciding that I want to get it for him, I was informed that our military health insurance, TriCare, does not cover helmets. It all has to be paid out of pocket. According to TriCare, getting a helmet is just "cosmetic". That broke my heart. How are my husband and I supposed to come up with almost $3,000 in such a short amount of time? Not to mention what we have to pay for seeing all the specialists. Saving up that much money would take a couple months. And by that time, Peyton's skull will be hardened and the helmet will be no good to him. I can not imagine having my son walk around with these physical problems just because I couldn't afford to fix it for him. I feel more helpless than ever.
So I am asking you to please help me, help my son.Every donation towards his helmet, his follow up appointments, his future back surgery, and traveling expenses to go back and forth is greatly appreciated. I just want my son to be a happy healthy boy and to grow up having everything he deserves. I appreciate you taking the time to read this, and even if you don't donate, I'm just happy that I can write about my experience with my son.
