Send Ashley to Africa!

(Above: some of the children from the orphanage)

Hello family and friends!

For those of you that don't already know me, my name is Ashley. I live in Lancaster, PA and have attended Victory Church in Lancaster since 2009. I have been involved in the children's ministry since 2010, I take part in the mentor and protégé program, as well as a ladies Bible study, and an at-home small group bible study! So naturally, being so involved in my church community, I've always been curious about missions work. I've been presented with the opportunity to be a part of mission's trips past. Sadly, whether it be nursing school or recovery from a recent spinal surgery, I have always been unable to go. This year it will all change! God has so graciously made it His will to send me to Liberia, Africa!

Liberia is a poverty stricken country located in West Africa along the North Atlantic Ocean. It is home to a needy population of 3.7 million who live life below $1.25 per day. Liberia is also home to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who is the 1st women president ever elected in Africa's history. The country was established by freed American slaves in 1820, and the capital of Liberia, Monrovia, was in fact named after the American President James Monroe.

I will leave for Liberia June 8th and return June 17th. I will be making the trip with CHAP International, a non-governmental organization that was established in 2004 by founder Jay Stanley Weaver. Once in Liberia we will be working closely with The Liberian Christian Orphanage, an orphanage that CHAP supports financially from our home office here in Lancaster. The orphanage is home to 65 beautiful children!

The mission's team and I will be conducting several small projects during our stay in Liberia. One of which I am given the opportunity to use my nursing degree to come alongside the volunteers of the orphanage and educate them on minor first aid techniques, proper care of wounds, and teach the basics of simple hygiene. I am eager and excited to help better the lives of the child of the orphanage. I also have taken on the responsibility of acquiring basic medical and first aid supplies and bringing them to the orphanage from the states. Another project that we will be working will require the donation of gently used pillow cases. All of the ladies of the trip are taking lessons to sew dresses, by hand, out of pillow cases for the little girls of the orphanage! We will also be teaching some of the older girls of the orphanage how to sew as well, that way they are able to apply what they learned and then utilize the product as future income.

Liberia was recently rated the 2nd most miserable country in the world; due to a CPI Index of 5.5% and a staggering unemployment rate of 85%. I am blessed to be given the opportunity to help a country in dire need of a Savior! This is also opportunity for you to be a part of this trip as well! The total cost of the trip is $3,400, which does not include the cost of a Passport, travelers insurance, a Visa, and several hundred dollars worth of vaccinations. $1,950 of the $3,400 total is airfare. By donating money to support my trip will not only help to fly me there, but help by improving upon the lives of the fatherless children of Liberia, Africa! I have set up this website in which you are able to donate!

Even if you are unable to contribute financially, please keep the team in your thoughts and prayers as we make this journey! I will be writing a follow-up letter with pictures and a brief update of what we accomplished in Liberia during the duration of our trip! Thank you all!
