At 33 weeks pregnant, Jenna, age 29, and her fiancé, Jordan, were faced with devastating news: Jenna had relapsed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. One week later she went into labor 6 weeks prematurely and had an emergency C-section. While her baby son was still in NICU, Jenna began a 3 week stay at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa for induction chemotherapy. After 2 weeks in NICU, baby Sawyer was able to leave the hospital and join Jenna at Moffitt for the rest of her stay there.
Jenna was released from the hospital recently and has just completed a week of rigorous bone marrow transplant testing. Jordan has taken a leave of absence from his job to care for Jenna and their baby. They will "enjoy" another 2 weeks of normalcy at home with their new baby and their two dogs until the transplant process begins. The process begins with intense chemotherapy that will completely eliminate her own bone marrow, leave her without an immune system, and unable to produce any more eggs, followed by the transplant itself. This will require a 3-4 week stay in the Bone Marrow Unit of Moffitt, which does not allow children visitors. Upon discharge she will be required to live within a 30 minute radius of the hospital for 2 months. She will also be required to have a 24 hour caregiver for herself and, if she wants her newborn son with her, will be required to have a separate caregiver for the baby. Jenna, a cardiac surgical nurse, will be unable to work for at least a year, during the anti-rejection period, and then won’t be able to return to the job she loves because of the risk to her future health.
It takes a village and Jenna and Jordan are blessed with an incredible support system: a VILLAGE of family and friends who are helping in their own ways - prayers, financially, meals, baby items.
