Harlem Sound Project May 5th Concert

Welcome! We are so happy you decided to come this far. Won't you stay a while?
The Harlem Sound Project is embarking upon its most ambitious concert to date. On Sunday, May 5th, at 4pm, upwards of 30 musicians will work together to bring awesome and fun music to uptown Manhattan. On the program is Henri Tomasi's Fanfares Liturgiques, Steven Snowden's Jim, Who Ran Away from this Nurse and was Eaten by a Lion (check out a sneak peek of it up above, featuring the composer doing the vocal part!), and Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat. And believe me when I tell you how hard these harmonically gifted people work- I should know, I went to school with most of them.
Also on the program will be the World Premiere of Harlem Fanfare by composer and conductor Sung Jin Hong.
They deserve a fair wage for their talents. This is where you, dear reader, come in.
I would like to pay every musician involved in the concert $50 per service. With 30 people playing between 4 and 7 services for this concert, that is a good chunk of change. Add on top of that transport fees for the large percussion instruments and printing costs for the flyers and programs, well, you get the amount listed at the top of this campaign.
The Harlem Sound Project has always strived to give the musicians that play at least some sort of compensation. It is so important that the musicians get paid even when no money comes in from ticket sales. As in, the money has come straight out of the pocket of the Artistic Director (i.e. yours truly). Eventually I will create a Board of Directors and apply for 501c3 status and be able to apply for grants to do big concerts like this. But that is a long, expensive road upon which I am not yet ready to tread.
I am completely aware that $8,500 is a lot to ask for out of a crowdfunding campaign. But any amount I can get from this will help me get these musicians paid. Even if I only make a few hundred dollars, I can buy dinner for everyone on one or two nights. Musicians like food too!
In any case, anything you can kick in would be amazing- every dollar counts! The Harlem Sound Project does not judge $1 donations- rather, we embrace them just as warmly as the $100 donations. We love all our donations, and do not play favorites. <3
