Paul and Carol Bedford have lived next door with their daughter Coraleen for fourteen years now. Our homes are very close, so being neighborly and cordial is the standard. Carol is the first to say hello as she begins a very regimented day. She provides a watchful, neighborhood eye and shares delicious pickled vegetables from her small garden. Paul is a guy always willing to offer a helping hand; you see the pleasure on his face. He saw to plowing the entire street during our last blizzard. It's just who they are.
Coraleen who is now14 has been mentally challenged since birth. Her unique needs and constant monitoring provided solely by her mother and father, besides the few hours she attends specialized schooling. Here, love and dedication are challenged beyond the scope of everyday parenting. But they do it, day after day, year after year, consistently with incredible patience, sacrifice and steadiness. Somehow Carol manages to spend time with elderly services, something she said she enjoys doing.
Yesterday Carol told us Paul was in the hospital-undergoing test then unimaginably, began suffering a stroke as he spoke with Carol on the phone. As if these events were not enough to bear, his test came back to confirm stage four-bladder cancer.
Paul works hard providing for their household so medical bills and loss of income are first concerns. Carol must be there for Coraleen constantly, leaving her visits with him severely limited in this most serious time. I believe her to be among some of the strongest people I have met. Surely, kindness and generosity will help them in many ways.
We hope for Carol and Paul to realize they are not alone and help provide assistance to them in the most vital way. In numbers we can impact their unfortunate circumstances and make a difference how they manage this most difficult time. We hope to provide a means of action for all family and friends, some of whom Paul, Carol and Coraleen may not yet know. People who refuse to feel helpless, because that is who we are.
