About Mark:

In 2005 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. The procedure I chose to suppress the cancer growth was a robotic prostatectomy that completely removed the prostate gland.

The cancer returned in spring of 2011 and metastasized into the bones. Since spring of 2011, I have been on hormone therapy to suppress the cancer cells from riding piggyback on healthy testosterone hormone. The hormone therapy was affective for a year and a half.

In the fall of 2012, new complications began to make themselves known, starting with deep vein thrombosis, which led to clots breaking off and appearing in the lung. A blood clot filter was installed near the heart in January 2013.

In the beginning of February 2013, I was admitted for blood clots and pericardial fluid around the sack of my heart and also in the lining of the lungs. The neurosurgeon installed a pericardial window to drain any excess fluid, but I returned to the hospital February 19, 2013 due to more complications starting with Pneumonia. Alternate visits to the ICU were made for blood thinning complications and hemorrhaging occurred during one procedure to stop the clotting.

Due to all these complications and the aggressive nature of the prostate cancer, the doctors at Bergan Mercy and I have decided to suspend further treatments and procedures. As a result, I suffered a mild stroke on March 11, 2013.

I have chosen to be admitted to Josie Harper Hospice Care in Omaha, NE. Hospice is providing me with end of life quality care. All other treatments from Bergan Mercy hospital including transfusions, x-rays, cat scans, blood tests have all been suspended.

My quality of life will now be centered on comfort.
