Foster Kids Matter

Donation protected
Children are placed in foster care through no fault of their own. They’re promised a safer environment than with their family, but this system is not always a safe place for kids--some don’t make it alive.
We are on a mission to travel around the world and continue to advocate for our kids in foster care.

We’ve experienced the foster care system firsthand as children and worked within it as adults.
Our mom used crack while pregnant with us, and we were taken away from our family at birth. After 2 years in foster care, an abusive, unloving family adopted us. We spent our childhood struggling with identity and losing hope that we could ever receive the love we needed.
Recently we spent about a year working in a group home for older boys in foster care, and it opened our eyes to the state of this system. These boys were suffering in this home. Staff were instructed by leadership not to form close relationships with the boys, the facilities were dirty--and the kids were left to clean it up when the state came to investigate, the children were dressed in ratty clothes and shoes that were falling apart. It was more like a prison than a place of healing for kids struggling without a family.
Though we documented the conditions and repeatedly reported it to the state and the corporate headquarters of the home, change never came for these boys. We were eventually fired over an intentional scheduling error because we were creating too many questions for the home.
This is a systemic problem in foster care. Kids are viewed and treated as paychecks instead of invested in and lifted up to heal. It happens in foster families, adoptive families, and it happens on a systemic level in group homes and institutions--where about 10% of kids in foster care live.
