My sister Natasha Mitchell, her husband Chris and my sweet 7 mo old niece and my 3 year old nephew have had a terrible thing happen to their home. They hired a company to remove their popcorn ceiling; this contractor did not properly test before starting the project. Then they didn’t contain or clean it up properly and therefore contaminated their entire home, putting them and their children at risk. A third party assessed it as a major "Asbestos Spill" with excessive levels of asbestos throughout the home. They have been immediately displaced from their home and will not be able to return until the home has been fully cleaned by an abatement company, which will be weeks. Asbestos can only be cleaned from hard surfaces, all soft materials must be destroyed.
It's just heartbreaking... they are losing all of their furniture, carpet, their bedding, their clothes, and toys, almost all of their belongings. The total estimated costs of just the clean up is $28,000-$30,000 and that doesn't even include the replacement of all of their belongings. The contractor is taking zero responsibility and will not help, and claims no insurance.
My sister and brother in law work their tails off and are just getting started out in life. They are so kind and diligent and hard working; this is a devastating blow. When they are allowed to go home, everything needs to be replaced (carpets, furnace, all furniture, bedding, clothes, electronics, appliances, and toys which is estimated at an additional $20k to $30k.) My nephew cries daily about wanting to go home and play with his toys (which are no longer viable) and we have to explain that "their house is broken".
My sister kindly is always looking for a silver lining and I was touched to hear her say, that in some very sad way, hopefully the blessing from this nightmare is that maybe it will prevent another family in the future to have to go through this one day.
