Javier Barra risked his own life to save Jack. He is our hero.
The 7th of March was an ordinary morning. I was dropping the kids off at school and, due to the nature of Iquique, had to park our car on a steep hill. During the unloading process, Zoe and I were already outside and Jack was just getting out when the car rolled backwards. Jack's open door trapped him and the car began dragging him down the hill. From across the street Javier saw Jack was in danger and, without hesitation, ran to save him. Before Jack was crushed between our car and another parked vehicle, Javier threw him to safety. Because of Javier's selfless act, we are lucky enough to say we have Jack Bear at home recovering from only minor fractures and abrasions.
Unfortunately, Javier was not quite as lucky and suffered a broken femur during the rescue. After more than a week awaiting surgery in the public hospital, he too has returned home and will be in recovery for several months. As he is a self-employed, professional fitness instructor he does not have insurance or another form of worker's compensation. The bottom line is until he can return to work, he does not have an income. Ethan and I are doing everything we can to help Javier and his wife, but if you would like to do something extra to say "thank you for saving Jack," may I suggest donating any amount of money to make his recovery just a little more tolerable. Thank you for your consideration!
