My name's Michael Perez from Omaha, Nebraska and this campaign is for me and my family.
March 4th my wife was granted 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. She was forced to take the leave earlier than she had planned due to her going into pre-term labor. Doctors stopped the baby from coming early and put her on immediate bed rest. On April 1st my daughter Olivia was born. This will forever be the best day of my life.
My wife recieved her first paycheck since then on June 29th. Because our government doesn't think mothers deserve paid leave we've had to overdraft our bank accounts every month and find ways to bring them back to positive before the time limit ran out only to do it again the following day. We are in a hole and the only way to get caught up is to ask for help. Before the unpaid maternity leave we were caught up with all of our bills and were slowly saving up to chip away at debt. We were in a good place but we just didn't save up enough for the struggle that was coming.
Support for motherhood shouldn't be a matter of luck; it should be a matter of course. America should have the good sense to join nearly every other country in providing paid maternity leave.
The money raised here will go directly to bills and getting our checking accounts out of the negative. $1,500 is the exact amount of money that will bring us back to where we were before we had to ask for help.
All in all, I feel like a complete failure and I am so embarrassed to have to do this but I need to ask for help. I appreciate any and all support whether it be through funding or sharing this page on Facebook or Twitter. Thank you.
