HELP MY MOM FIGHT ALS

Donation protected

This is my mother, Deb. She was recently diagnosed with ALS last October. ALS (aka Lou Gherig's disease) is a terminal condition that destroys motor neurons leaving the individual unable to move (i.e. Stephen Hawking has ALS), but fully intact cognitively - trapped in their body. My mom has Bulbar, which starts in your tongue, making it difficult, and soon impossible, to speak, swallow and breathe on your own. It's progressed - and now she is experiencing loss of strength in her arms and hands.

My mom has devoted her career to serving the needs of the profoundly physically and developmentally disabled, and now she in turn needs the same compassion and assistance that she has unflinchingly offered everyday of her life.

The ALS has recently rendered her unable to work. Her last day at school is April 5th. She is discovering the safety net we have been led to believe exists is thin beyond belief. For what it will provide, it is deliberately slow and there are many items and services a person facing this condition will need, that simply must be purchased and cannot be delayed. Not only is this process emotionally devastating, but it is financially devastating as well.

She will experience 5-6 months of no income, no early retirement and no disability. My family and I have been assisting as much as we physically and financially can, but the reality is that we are unable to afford to mirror the VERY MODEST income she was making as a Special Ed teacher.

We need your help. All of the funds raised will go towards her basic living expenses.

If you are able to breathe, eat, walk, move, work and otherwise live a normal life, please visit http://www.alsa.org/about-als/ to learn about this killer. Please consider donating any amount you can.

My family and I - especially my mother - would be extremely forever grateful.
