Village Education Project

Hola from Ecuador! We are two students from Amherst College, Rachel Cohen and Diane Lee, who are currently working for a non-profit called The Village Education Project in Otavalo, Ecuador. The Village Education Project provides a comprehensive education program for students in the rural highlands.  Because of the schools' high cost of uniforms and school books, only 1 in 10 students in the impoverished rural areas of Ecuador receive a high school education.   The Village Education Project provides full scholarships for students in the villages where it works so that they can attend high school for free.  But this is not enough.  By the time they are ready to attend high school, most of these students are behind in their studies.

That's where we come in.  Each year, volunteers come from across the United States to catch the students up in the areas where they need it the most: English, math, and computer skills.  We are being led by Ecuadorian educators, so the lessons that we will give are consistent with what the students will learn when they start high school.

Before arriving in Ecuador, each volunteer donates an amount of money that goes towards financing these scholarships; however, because of the devastation in Ecuador due to the earthquake and Zika virus (don't worry we're SUPER safe up here in the mountains) many applicants withdrew and there are only 4 volunteers this year. Of course, despite this setback we are making the most of our time here but unfortunately, there are not enough funds to finance the scholarship students.

Again, I am Rachel Cohen. I am From Danville, California and I am raising funds for the nonprofit for which I am currently a volunteer. The funds will go towards pulling this nonprofit out of the debt that was created when only four volunteers came to Ecuador this year. I will donate 100% of donations directly to the nonprofit.

Please help if possible! Thanks!
