Freddy Mendoza's Medical Fund

Perhaps you know Freddy Mendoza from playing at your wedding, your friend’s party, or at your local pub. Perhaps he’s served you your favorite Italian meal with a smile at Consol’s where he’s worked for over 20 years. Or, maybe he’s the guy you laugh and joke with while sharing a meal together. No matter how you met or how long you’ve known him, you probably have a story of how Freddy has touched your life or brought a smile to your face. Freddy is always there to enjoy a good party, good music, dancing and being around wonderful people.

At the beginning of the new year, Freddy started feeling not like his usual vibrant self. A little discomfort quickly escalated to pain that could not be ignored. At the end of January, the doctor believed this pain was caused by acid reflux. He was prescribed medication aimed to fix the problem in six to eight weeks. Unfortunately, the pain became worse. Freddy was in agony every time he ate or drank anything. This lead to significant weight loss, general malaise and a dulling of Freddy’s generally cheery spirit.

In the early March, Freddy was finally able to see a specialist. One consultation and a Endoscopy later, two ulcers were revealed at the bottom of his esophagus. No wonder he was in such pain! Relieved to know the pain was temporary, and the biopsy negative for cancer, he left the doctor with a new prescription and a 8-12  weeks recovery window.

Six weeks later with no relief in sight, feeling weak and tired from the continuous pain, Freddy went back to the doctor. After another Endoscopy and biopsy the doctor said the thing no one wants to hear. Is Cancer. Scans and tests confirmed that Freddy’s type B Lymphoma stage 1 has a good prognosis (95% curable). After 3 rounds of chemo, and 4 weeks of radiation the doctor feels confident that Freddy will be back to his pain-free, vivacious self in months.

No one is looking forward to the next few months of chemotherapy and radiation and all of the challenges they bring, but Freddy feels positive about the future. (And so does the doctor.) While Freddy plans to continue his role as entertainer-extraordinaire, he has not been able to work at Consol’s since he first fell sick. This, coupled with not having insurance, the costs associated with the initial tests and doctor visits alone, have accumulated quickly into an overbearing financial challenge.

So friends, it’s at this time that we humble ourselves to ask for your help. The medical bills, medication, items needed for home care and daily needs seem to be amassing a financial burden at a rapid and overwhelming rate. Your helping hand can make the world of difference towards a healthy and happy future. With thankful hearts, Freddy and Alex appreciate your kindness, prayers and positive thoughts during this challenging time.

Freddy looks forward to seeing you at a party performing and/or at Consol's.
