When I started my equine business I never thought I would end up taking in so many unwanted horses. Since then my heart has been broken over and over by the sheer number horses that need help. These animals are neglected, unwanted, abused, starved, tortured and worse.
Since the day I became the proud owner of North Hill Equestrian, I have taken in 8 different unwanted horses, rehabilitated them and phased them into my lesson programme. I am well prepared to take care of these horses ongoing needs, but as the owner of a fairly new business, my most recent horse needs more help than I can currently afford.
Three days ago I received a text message from a good friend of mine alerting me to a herd (8) of Appaloosas desperately needing homes. The next day, four friends, a convoy of horse trailers and some really big hearts were on our way to the location where the horses were being kept. They had obviously been neglected. They had seriously overgrown hooves. The paddocks were small, and were filled with poison ivy; it was clear they had gotten hungry enough to try and eat it. Once we caught the Summer, we saw that the halter she was wearing had cut into her nose and her face. Her paddock mate was a different story, she was completely afraid. Eventually, with some serious drama from Summer we got both girls loaded into the trailer and we were off!
The next day I had my farrier (Ken Beaver) out. I was worried about Summer’s left hind because I noticed her limping off of it in the paddock. As he trimmed he says to me "well... This isn't good" I came around to see that she was missing her entire frog on one foot (front left), serious thrush had eaten it away to nothing but a bloody pit (for those who don't know, the frog is the sensitive, fleshy part of the foot, located in the centre of the hoof). But the other three feet looked ok underneath. We found out she had foundered and we will be doing corrective trimming over the next several months to correct the rotation. Upon closer examination of Summer, there is a large scar and lump on that left hind cannon bone, which will require X-Rays and likely surgery, depending on what the x-Rays come back with.
I created this page to ask for help, help to get this mare what she needs, X-rays are expensive, surgery is even more so. She needs YOUR help. I will be covering whatever this mare needs over the donations that we collect. ALL donations accepted, from feed and supplements, to vet wrap and duct tape, every little bit helps. Any extra money raised will go toward vet bills for my existing rescue horses who require life long medication. I'm putting this out there; please find it in your heart to help these lovely creatures. They deserve nothing less than everything.
