On June 20, 2016 approximately 2 months after Jess's mom passed away from cancer, 1 month before Jess needs surgery to remove Thyroid due to cancer and 1 day prior to Matt needed to have major back surgery, Matt & Jess Acker heard devestating words no parents should ever hear:
"YOUR SON HAS BRAIN CANCER"
With those 5 words their lives are forever changed.
Sweet little 14 month old baby Raylan has been diagnosed with Pontine Glioma, a highly aggressive cancer that is difficult to treat. It is found in the pons area of the brain which is located at the top of the brainstem. this is the area that controls all body functions such as walking, talking, hearing, seeing and eating. As well as the body's most vital functions, respiratory and heart etc, anything that the brain tells the body to do. At this point no positive treatment has been found due to how rare this type of cancer is and lack of research. We have found 2 hospitals so far that are running clinical trials. Matt & Jess, along with baby Raylan and their daughter Chloe, reside in Florida. This would require them to travel out of state to Boston and Philadelphia. All while needing to take a leave of absence from work.
