Summer Internship - SOM & Cannon Desgn

Out of a student body of 200 , I've been selected to be one of fourteen students to represent the University of Utah, School of Architecture, in a summer internship program. As a group, we will be working in conjunction with both Cannon Design and SOM (Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill) on projects to redesign the master-plan for Chicago's Chinatown district, and to create a visionary plan for Chicago's uptown district. SOM has completed over 10,000 projects in more than fifty countries around the world and maintains offices in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Washington D.C., London, Brussels, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. In addition, Cannon Design wields an equally impressive resume. Collectively, they have received over 300 awards for design excellence, technological innovation and imaginative thought leadership. Cannon Design currently maintains offices in Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Mumbai, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco, Shanghai, St. Louis, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and Washington D.C.

The opportunity of interning at SOM and Cannon Design will be the start to developing a worldwide network of architectural contacts. This global network will be invaluable when exiting graduate school looking for jobs at firms like SOM and Cannon Design in various cities like NYC, Chicago, London, San Francisco, etc. An optimist would suggest that if SOM and/or Cannon Design like my design skills and/or my work ethic, both may offer me a fellowship, and in turn, pay the steep tuition looming at Columbia next fall. Even without this optimistic outlook, at the very least, interning in Chicago will be an amazing experience, filled with personal growth. However, I'm struggling to pay the fees to attend the internship. For this, I need your help. Please offer what financial assistance you can render. If you can only donate $5, please do so. If you can offer more, please do. These experiences will help push me towards a life filled with meaningful interactions and experiences.

Program duration June 6th-July 19th

The University of Utah is helping to subsidize a portion of the cost. However, they've asked the elected students to pay a percentage of the fee. The information below outlines the required fees, and in turn, the fees I'm asking assistance to pay.

$2000 program fee: covers housing in Chicago, office space at SOM Chicago and/or Cannon Design Chicago, unlimited Chicago Transit (the "L" subway and bus pass), and a $500 airfare allowance. Fees do not cover food outside of group meals, personal expenses, or tuition.
$750 academic fee: covers the fee for the University's Continuing Education department.
$1250 living expenses: this is not a required fee. Living expenses will cover six weeks of meals, personal expenditures, site seeing, and emergency expenses.

$4000 is the total amount needed for internship.
