Rose, our beloved Mother and Friend was diagnosed in April of 2015 with Stage 4 Lung Cancer.
In March of 2015, Rose went for a routine scan at her doctor's suggestion to ensure that she was in good health. She had given up smoking several months prior and the family was very proud of her. At the time she was feeling great. The news was quite shocking when we heard the diagnosis.
Rose, always the optimist didn't let this news change her positive and cheery way of living. She was full of spirit and lived life to the max over the course of the next year as she underwent chemotherapy at Vanderbilt. Unfortunately the disease continued to spread. After several rounds of radiation, in March of this year the doctors found that a tumor had grown in her brain. On her birthday, March 7th, she had brain surgery to remove the tumor
The surgery was successful, and we breathed a sigh of relief, but the results were short lived. Subsequent scans found additional growths in the brain and Rose lost function of her left leg shortly after the surgery. Radiation was attempted one last time. Unfortunately the radiation did not provide the results that we were all hoping for, and when more tests were administered, we were told the worst:
Rose was diagnosed with Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare complication of cancer in which the disease spreads to the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. LC occurs in approximately 5% of people with cancer and is usually terminal.
Just about 14 days ago Rose, alongside with her Son Jay, and daughter Janice, was told that she most likely only had weeks to 1-2 months left to live. She was placed on hospice and returned to her Murfreesboro, TN Home.
The rapid decline of her remaining health has been heartbreaking to witness. It is her wish to remain at home, as she has a life-long fear of the nursing home after witnessing some tragic outcomes at a previous place of employment.
Her insurance only covers "routine hospice care" and as her condition worsens her only option may be a facility. As a family we are hoping that with your generosity we can find the means to make at-home care a possibility for Rose.
We also wish to ease the burden for her son Jay. He is currently on FMLA as he volunteered to stay home to care for Rose and is not bringing in any income. Rose's care has become a 24-hour a day commitment, and at some point it will not be economically feasible for Jay to continue to stay home. We also feel that her care needs are beginning to be more suited for someone with medical training to ensure the highest level of comfort, cleanliness, and care during the days ahead.
We are very humbly seeking assistance with this important expense for Rose. Please do not feel obligated to give, but know that any and all funds received will go directly to Rose’s care and necessary expenses. We have been told it would cost approximately $250 a day to provide in-home hospice care for Rose since her insurance will not cover this.Whether or not you are able to give financially, we want you to know how very grateful we are for all of the support, encouragement, love, prayers, and kind words we have received during this difficult time.
