CCIR Trauma Counselling

Hello! You found us. Please stay long enough to read about what we do and who we are.

CCIR (Vancouver Island Counselling Centre for Immigrants & Refugees Association) is a social service agency with a mandate to assist those who are survivors of displacement, war or migration, and who suffer from the psychological and emotional wounds of trauma or loss, to the extent that daily living is compromised.

Our mission statement: Supporting Canada’s newest residents to overcome the scars of trauma and migration, and strengthen capacities to find their places in our welcoming communities.

CCIR is now a group of about 25 counsellors – social workers, psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists – who have committed to the provision of pro bono services until December 2016. We have faculty members from our university, a psychiatrist and family physician, as well as interpreters/translators who are trained to work with us. Our team is multi-cultural and brings a wide ranges of specialties to our work. Our professionals are committed to supervision and on-going training.

We have no competition, no other organization that does what we do. Perhaps that is the reason we have grown like a weed since we began only months ago. We have welcomed refugees and immigrants from a wide range of countries. We have provided training and consultation to a large number of groups – settlement agencies, teachers, public health workers, social workers in family and children services, sponsorship groups.

We feel very supported by our community. Excellent partnerships have developed. Referrals come from settlement agencies, schools, family service agencies. We have worked hard to acquire a large office space from the generosity of a local church. We have a host of enthusiastic volunteers, including physiotherapists, teachers, retirees and artists who provide a range of allied services. We have recieved and appreciate the media attention.

We are unabashedly ambitious. We are driven by the value of effective and efficient service, and so we strive to remain current with best practices, and provide a climate where research is conducted.

We want to be the very best we can be. It is an investment in the future of our communities. Help us help others!
