Helping Chewie

On June 3, Sarah and I found two starving puppies on a flooded shell road out of EvaDale, Texas.   This is an area that has recently been flooded and still has many areas underwater.  The two pups were obviously abandoned down this flooded road, out in the country where no one would see the person responsible as they did their horrible deed.  Left to die alone in weather that no human could withstand, water continually rising with more rain coming down.

Chewie and his sister Chicka were admitted to our vet's office where we expected them to thrive after baths, worming, all those things we normally provide for those we pick up.  Chicka seemed to start improving immediately but little Chewie did not.  He was treated for parvo and kept in isolation.  Alone and afraid, he showed no improvements.  Eleven days into his treatment I opted to move him to A&M as he was steadily going backward, daily becomming sicker and sicker.  After speaking with the vet, I knew death was knocking at the door.

On the afternoon of June 15, I made the decision to --sink or swim-- have him admitted to one of the best vet hospitals in the world.  Our own Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.  The trip was long and I knew it was not going to be cheap but I knew in my heart this was what we had to do.  Many did not understand why I would spend money on a stray dog that I had only had in my hands for the hour it took to transport and admit.  Although we had been responsible for him for the 11 days, I had only held him for one hour.  At least in my arms.........I held him immediately and will forever in my heart.

Chewie has undergone extensive testing to discover the cause of his deterioration and after being dubbed as the "sickest dog in the hospital" it was discovered that he has a parasite called HETEROBILPARZIA that lives in swampy water and once it makes it to a dog, burrows into the skin to make its way into the lungs and GI tract of the dog.  His treatment is very expensive as the damage to him has been very consuming.  We, at this point, are praying he can make a full recovery but he is still in intensive care an will remain so for any number of days.  Something so small inside him has almost taken his life.  Something that I, before now, had no idea even existed.

We humbly ask for your help with his medical needs.  The first estimate was $3000 but yesterday it was, out of necessity, raised to $5000.  Why would we invest so much in a dog we just picked up?  The answer is really pretty simple when you know Sweetpups.  The dog crossed our paths because God chose to send him our way.  WE didn't select him to come into our rescue, GOD sent him our way.   That makes us accountable before God to do what's right for him as God directs.  Yes, he was a stray.  Yes, we simply picked him up in a ditch and could easily have just said to euthanize him.  But if we did that so easily, could we still say "Sweetpups -Where Every Dog Matters"?
