29th Annual Sleep Out for the Homeless

For 29 years local Mechanicsburg youth groups have joined together for the Sleep Out for the Homeless to raise awareness around the realities of homelessness. Positioned near Thanksgiving students comes to realize that being grateful is not an attitude surrounding excess but is one that can be directed towards the basics needs in life. Furthermore, students have the ability and impact to help others who might be struggling in having some of life's basic needs, such as a consistent bed to sleep in. The Sleep Out is just one way our students grow in their awareness of homelessness and help in supporting the agencies in our community who tirelessly support others in homeless situations.
Last year our event was held offsite and excluded the sleepover for the safety of participants during the COVID-19 pandemic but this year it returns to it's normal format at First United Methodist Church at 135 W. Simpson Street in Mechanicsburg, PA. On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19 and 20, First UMC, Mechanicsburg BIC, and Camp Hill UMC will hold its Annual Youth Sleepout for the Homeless. Students will line up along Simpson Street and collect conations from the community. In addition to street collecting, this online donation page will be used to raise money for local agencies including New Hope Ministries, Family Promise and Bethesda Mission, and their work to aid the homeless. Past Sleepouts have raised $5,000 or more for this important cause.
The event also seeks to create awareness of the realities of homelessness by giving teens just a small glimpse of what it is like to live on the street including sleeping out in cardboard boxes in the church parking lot until Saturday morning. Participants are provided a small bowl of soup for a meal and encouraged not to bring snacks or electronic devices.
Street donations will be collected from 3:30 to 10:00 Friday evening. Interested persons also can donate here or online at www.fumchurch.com.
