Building a School in Senegal

To Our Dear Family and Friends:
Joey and I are both very excited to share that we were one of the lucky few matches chosen to represent Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles  in a joint collaboration with Build On . We will be going to a remote village in Senegal from July 22 - 29 to help build a school! This will be a humbling opportunity for us to give back, bond with each other, make new friends, and share a new experience.

Delta has graciously agreed to sponsor Joey's flight and Build On will be covering meals and ground transportation for both. We do however still get to raise funds to cover Josh's plane ticket (roughly $2,000 ) and additional expenses for the both of us like vaccinations, medication, and special items/supplies needed for the trip.

Please support us so we can make this opportunity a reality. Every bit counts and even if you are unable to donate, please share this link and keep us in your thoughts and prayers for a safe and successful trip. Thank you.  <3

Gratefully Yours,

Joey & Josh

About BuildOn:
Education is a basic human right. Yet those who need education the most – children living in poverty - are the least likely to attend school.  For two decades buildOn has mobilized rural communities in some of the economically poorest countries on the planet. We build schools with villages that have historically had no adequate school structure – where students are squeezed into dark and crumbling mud huts, or are taught under trees when the weather permits, or have to walk multiple miles to a neighboring village, or can’t attend school at all.

Before breaking ground on a new school, every member of the partnering community, both men and women, must sign the buildOn Covenant. The Covenant is a solemn promise between buildOn and each village outlining their respective contributions to the project. buildOn contributes the engineering, materials, skilled labor and project supervision. Each village provides the land, local materials such as sand, and the unskilled labor to build the school. Additionally, every village promises to send girls and boys to school in equal numbers.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles:
Every year, BBBSLA impacts more 1,500 youth through five unique mentoring programs that serve children and youth in their communities, schools, and in the workplace. By building a strong, one-to-one and professionally-supported mentoring relationship to serve as a foundation for transformative impact and life skills learning, BBBSLA’s innovative approaches to expanding mentoring opportunities help to close both the achievement and opportunity gaps that exist for too many underserved children and youth.
