I was crowned Ms.
Wheelchair Kentucky 2013 in October 2012. I have been traveling and speaking
to various groups about achievement, advocacy, and my platform. I work as a
Rehabilitation Technologist, so it is a natural extension to make my platform
"Equality through Technology". I am very passionate about architectural
accessibility and getting the right tools into the hands of people with
disabilities to "level the playing field". I now have the privilege of
representing Kentucky at the Ms. Wheelchair
America national pageant in July, in Houston ... if I can raise enough funds
to go.
The mission of Ms. Wheelchair America is to provide an opportunity of achievement for women who happen to be wheelchair users to successfully educate and advocate for the more than 54 million Americans living with disabilities. Unlike traditional beauty pageants, Ms. Wheelchair America is not a contest to select the most attractive individual. It is instead a competition based on advocacy, achievement, communication and presentation to select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman for persons with disabilities. The selected representative must be able to communicate both the needs and the accomplishments of her constituency to the general public, the business community and the legislature.
I have Muscular Dystrophy. Before getting my wheelchair in 2008, I earned an Master's in Computer Science and worked at Edwards Air Force Base. After getting my wheelchair I took up surfing with Life Rolls On, traveled to Scotland, and earned a 2nd Master's degree, and moved to Kentucky to work as a Rehabilitation Technologist. For my job, I help find the appropriate technology for persons with disabilities and provide training. My caseload includes students, people in various work environments, home modifications, wheelchair selection, and farm equipment modification.
The first half is due in mid-May, and the second half is due in mid-June. All funds raised over and above what I need will go directly to the Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky organization. The current president's goal is to host next year's Ms. Wheelchair America pageant in Louisville.
