Maranatha School Project
Access to education is a human right. Not
only is it a fundamental human right but also is the key to reducing poverty,
exploitation, and child labor. Every human being is entitled to have the
opportunity to receive education. It has proven to be essential to
promoting democracy, peace, tolerance and human development around the world.
Unfortunately access to education in most underdeveloped countries is the
reason poverty persists.
Maranatha village in Zambia is one of many
communities around the world that is poverty-stricken with little to no support
from the government. A small percentage of children on the outskirts of the
village are permitted to attend government-funded schools, leaving the children
of Maranatha forgotten. The village leaders are instrumental in providing basic
education to the children. They are passionate about what they do, and
understand the benefits of how an educated child can change a community and a
generation.
Last year I was given
the opportunity to travel with Nurses for Africa on a medical mission trip to
Maranatha Zambia. Our medical clinic was set up in a building that they
referred to as their school. It was very basic with walls (no windows or
doors), a roof and a mud floor. This building was the place where all of the
village children would gather to learn basics such as the alphabet, and
arithmetic. This small space was not accommodating to the amount of children
in the village. The group of nurses that I served with identified that this was
a need, and we decided collectively to make building a school our priority. The
identified amount needed for the development for the school will be $5,000.00
US dollars. This price includes completing the existing school walls,
installing doors and windows, building simple desks for the children, evening
out the dirt floor, and purchasing more textbooks for the school. This project
will be instrumental in providing opportunity for the children of Maranatha
Village.
