Help Chica with life-saving surgery and recovery

***FINAL Update 2/10/21- recheck went well, and although she is still battling the heartworm, that cost is doable for me and Brian to finish out. The hernia mesh area is still mildly swollen which the surgeon said it would heal on its own, she just needs to get the hertworms taken care of with shots and steroids and she should be able to run and play again. Thank you all for your help when we needed it most. ❤️❤️ I will be shutting this down in the next coming days.

You may know our story. If you don’t, a little recap. We rescued Chica in September from a kind man who’s house she walked into in Texas. We live in PA. Drove down, picked her up, she came right with us no hesitation. We already had Kai since March. Made it to Dallas, TX and got a quick exam to see what we need to resolve. She was positive for heartworms. Started the doxy, then 3 times she was supposed to go in for the Melarsomine shot, she wouldn’t eat, was sick, wouldn’t eat again. They took a scan and found she had a severe diaphragmic hernia. They wanted to resolve the heartworms first. Fast forward to Christmas Eve, we were going to go and get her shot but I wanted her to enjoy her Christmas morning and to wait just one more day. Luckily, I did. Christmas Day 2020 she wouldn’t stop being sick, she emptied out her whole stomach and was in critical condition. We had to go in to say our goodbyes because we were told she had the smallest chance to make it through. They took her in for emergency surgery that night. Long, grueling hours later we find she made it through the surgery, but she coded 3 times after. Her poor body fought it. Surgeon said it was the most complicated hernia he has ever worked on. They monitored her for a few days after. We were able to take her home, weak, tired, in pain. Few weeks after she gets sick, again, they fear the heartworms made it to her lungs from how she is breathing. They get her in ASAP for Melarsomine shot round 1. Bring her home on a special G.I. Kibble and Dry food. That was almost a month ago. We have been in and out of the ER since then dealing with her getting sick. (Even with the 10 pills a day and the bland diet with GI food) They thought she had bloat and wouldn’t make it. They thought her liver was failing. More tests came back negative. And that’s where we are today. She got sick again last night. We fasted her and we are going to give one last try today for bland diet and hope that it’s just the kibble bothering her. If she gets sick again I have a go-bag to take her 2 hours to Ithica to get some real answers. If she doesn’t get sick, we will still call on Monday and have both Vets we go to refer us up there. We need to know what is going on because if she can’t eat and continues to get sick, she can’t get the 2nd and 3rd dose of Melarsomine, and this would be all for nothing, and they would continue to infest her lungs more and cause irreversable damage.

*original post after her surgery*
Hello all, For those of you who have been keeping up with this story, we rescued our sweet girl Chica in September. We drove 24 hours one way just to pick her up. She walked into the house of a kind man in Texas who lived directly off the side of the highway looking for shelter. He was unable to take care of her and reached out online for someone to adopt her. We fell in love and drove down and our little family was completed. We have been so grateful help her with all of her health complications. We bathed her, dewormed her, and we are in the midst of her heart-worm treatment. Just two weeks ago we found out the news that she has a severe diaphramic hernia. The doctors and surgeons believe she was hit by a vehicle. She has scarring on her ribs and basically all of her internal organs are pressed against her left lung. As of two days ago she had to go in for emergency surgery because she was vomiting profusely. They did the surgery and Dr. Kirk said it was the most severe and complicated diaphragmic hernia he has ever operated on. Almost her entire liver, spleen, gull bladder, and half of her intestinal tract was pressed against her left lung. She’s in recovery as of right now but her future is still unknown because the immediate 24-48 hours after this procedure is the most crucial. With how long she is in recovery and the surgery and emergency bill, we are paying over $5,000 on the low end and over $8,000 on the high end. We ask our goal to be $5,000 just to cover the minimum expenses. We are trying our best to save our baby with what we have.

Update as of 1/26/21: she’s in the ER now. I adjusted the goal because they just threw a few thousand more on the bill. She’s sick and they worry about kidney failure and another hernia forming or her body not taking the mesh from the hernia procedure. I appreciate your time.
