AACG Challenge Grant

Donation protected
The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art has recently been awarded a $4,000 challenge grant from the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass. This grant is a 1:1 matching grant, meaning we need to raise $4 thousand in matching funds to the receive the award.

This Challenge Grant will assist iMOCA in leveraging funds towards two upcoming exhibitions featuring commissioned work by Indianapolis-based glass artist Benjamin Johnson. The first exhibition, featured at iMOCA’s CityWay Gallery depicts imagery of the moon throughout the lunar cycle. This new work was created specifically for the exhibition and includes fifteen vitreography prints and the seven glass panels used to create the prints. This exhibition will run July 1 – September 29, 2016.

The second component featuring Johnson’s work will take place July 30 – August 29, 2016 in iMOCA’s Window Gallery in Fountain Square. This heavily trafficked storefront space located on the cultural trail is an attraction enjoyed by visitors to Fountain Square both during and outside of iMOCA’s hours of operation. Johnson’s installation will feature a nine by fourteen-foot installation of hand-pulled hot glass cane. The glass cane is created from UV reactive materials and lit with special UV LED lighting, making the entire piece glow.

Johnson’s art is inspired by everyday occurrences and his interest in color theory and texture. He uses both of those factors to create patterns in his work that not only reveals layers within the glass, but also creates a unique surface texture. Working on both large-scale installations and individual sculptural pieces, makes Johnson’s practice unique among those creating contemporary glass today.

The artist holds a BFA from Kent State University and a MFA from Ball State University. His has continued his education at the Corning Museum of Glass, Pilchuck Glass School, and Scuola del Vetro Abate Zanetti in Murano, Italy. Johnson’s unique works have been shown in a number of exhibitions throughout the United States and featured in numerous publication including Art Glass Today.

Thank you for donating to iMOCA and helping us to bring unique and creative contemporary art to Indianapolis.
